R is for Room for All

April is...
National Poetry Month and National School Library Month.
All this week, in honor of these two things, I am posting poetry and projects that celebrate libraries.

Today's poets are first and second graders, who got us started last week.

In one of the Poetry Centers, I wrote the word "library" on a piece of paper. Here's how the second grade students responded:

The first grade students created poetry about their favorite reading subjects,

In the "you never know what you might find" category, this poem/statement was left along with the others. I appreciate the authentic voice and celebrate the student who expressed his or her understanding about fun.

Exploring poetry through centers has been interesting. The students are not getting as much exposure to specific poets, but they are certainly feeling comfortable playing with some different forms of poetry.
