Connecting Poetry to the 2nd Grade Science Curriculum
When the student teacher from a second grade classroom came to pick up the students last week, she observed the students writing poetry in the poetry centers. We started to talk about how much they love writing poetry. The students are exploring poetry in both the library and the classroom. She and I got to talking about her take-over week and I suggested that the students write poems as a way of expressing their understanding about what they are learning about forces of motion.
We set a date for collaborating. We made a plan. She made exemplars for three types of poems - acrostic, haiku, and shape. On the day of the lesson, I reviewed the types of poetry and she showed the exemplars. The students brainstormed words related to the unit and then set to being poets. Cool beans.
