December felt fun and busy, looking back, I know why...
Hour of Code
I led eleven classrooms through an Hour of Code in December.
Kindergarten
The students have been learning about our Wonder Wall (Nonfiction Neighborhood). They are learning that this is where to go to answer those wondering questions that start with who, what, when, where, why, and how.
First grade
I introduced the first graders to our online databases. They engaged in research on their Rotting Log creatures.
We had a visit from Dudley the Bear, who has been traveling the country this school year. He’ll be returning to his own school library in Michigan in May.
We read the book SWAP and the students compared and contrasted what they know about pirates and sailors.
second grade
The second graders voted on their Mock Caldecott choices and reviewed those votes.
They also learned how to use Destiny, our online library catalog.
third grade
The third graders voted on their Mock Caldecott choices and reviewed those votes.
They also explored TeachingBooks.net.
fourth grade
The fourth graders learned: how to create a Google Presentation; what a good presentation looks like; how to be ethical and smart users of information; and, how to find images with permissions that reinforce the information on their slides.
I learned that the creation process takes patience.
fifth grade
The fifth graders worked on their Native American projects while in the library. This unit was planned with the classroom teachers. The students learned how to access the databases, takes notes from both print and online resources, and how to cite those sources.
