"I have learned how to use the World Wide Web wisely"

I often take the pulse on what students feel they are learning during the library program. 

I will hold a focus group, have one-on-one conversations, query the line, or like today, ask students to share something they learn in or like about the library. These fifth grade responses to that question show the broad spectrum of learning that happens in the library. 

"You could give us a little more time but otherwise you did a really good job with the project overall."

The fifth graders watched their Browsing and Borrowing iMovie projects today! I so enjoyed watching them watch their videos. Much clapping and celebration followed each movie. They could all appreciate the work that had gone into the projects.

After they watched the movies, they listened to the second graders share back, via VoiceThread, what they learned from the fifth graders. The fifth graders then reflected on the projects. 

I appreciate how honest my students are and I take it as a compliment that our relationship is one that allows for this honesty. As always, there is room for growth for all of us. We are all learners on this educational journey.

Fourth Graders Share How They Will Take Care of Our Library

This week's focus is on library rules and routines that pertain to taking care of our library space and the materials in it. We kicked off the conversation by reading Library Lion, written by Michelle Knudsen and illustrated by Kevin Hawkes. Let me just tell you that there was absolute joy on the faces of the students as we read. You can read about the read aloud experience on this post: ReedALOUD: Library Lion. 

After reading the book, we connected to the story's theme of rules and why they are important. We also talked about how the lion showed his appreciation for the library by helping to take care of the space the materials in it. The fourth graders then took to Padlet to share their ideas for taking care of our library. The actionable things they could do and the things they would say. Padlet, a virtual sticky note platform, also allows the students to practice being good digital citizens. Given what they had to say, this library should be looking inviting and ready for every student coming through the doors!
